MonnaLisa Touch® – the laser that restores intimate health during menopause
I use the MonnaLisa Touch® laser for my patients at the Madra Medical Diagnostic Centre in Florence. It is a non-hormonal, painless, minimally invasive, fractional CO₂ treatment. It is indicated for managing the symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause by improving lubrication, elasticity and daily comfort.
Gynaecological conditions I treat using the MonnaLisa Touch® laser
The laser is commonly used to effectively treat:
- Vaginal atrophy and dryness
- Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Burning and itching
- Recurrent cystitis and vaginitis
- Post‑partum vaginal laxity
- Mild urinary incontinence
- Vulvodynia and vulvar pain
- Vulvar rejuvenation
These indications are supported by clinical documentation describing symptoms such as tissue thinning, increased pH, reduced lactobacillus flora, burning and mucosal fragility.
How the laser works on the vaginal mucosa
MonnaLisa Touch® uses a fractional CO₂ laser that emits gentle micro‑pulses. These impulses:
- stimulate new collagen production
- increase intracellular glycogen
- improve microcirculation
- promote recolonization by lactobacilli
- restore physiological pH
- enhance natural lubrication
The result is a thicker, more elastic, better hydrated mucosa that is more resistant to micro‑trauma.
Laser treatments available at the Madra Center
During my sessions, I perform two main types of treatment:
-
Internal vulvo vaginal MonnaLisa Touch® laser
This treatment targets the internal vaginal mucosa. It is indicated for:
- vaginal atrophy
- dryness
- dyspareunia
- altered pH
- reduced lactobacillus flora
- fragility and micro‑bleeding
It works by regenerating the mucosa from within, improving hydration, elasticity and comfort during intercourse.
-
External vulvar laser treatment
This treatment targets the external vulvar skin and mucosa. It is indicated for:
- vulvodynia
- post‑episiotomy pain
- chronic irritation
- vulvar rejuvenation
- external tissue laxity
The laser stimulates collagen and microcirculation, improving tone, sensitivity and local wellbeing.
How a session works: duration, sensations and recovery
Sessions are outpatient, quick and painless:
- duration: 10–20 minutes
- no anesthesia required
- only a mild warming sensation
- immediate return to daily activities
- avoid intercourse, sea, swimming pools and spas for 7–10 days
Who the treatment is suitable for
The treatment is suitable for:
- women in natural menopause
- women in therapy‑induced menopause (oncological treatments)
- women who cannot take estrogen
- women with persistent symptoms not resolved by creams or suppositories
- anyone seeking improved comfort, sexuality and quality of life
Who the treatment is not suitable for
As with any medical procedure, evaluation must be individualized: it is not a universal solution and results may vary. It must not be used in cases of:
- active vaginal infections
- pregnancy
- suspicious lesions
- unexplained vaginal bleeding
How many sessions are needed and when results appear
Standard protocol involves:
- 3 sessions spaced at least 30 days apart
- 1 maintenance session every six months to a year, in line with recommendations in the literature, which documents that the effects persist for up to a year
- 4–5 sessions for women with a history of cancer
65% of patients notice improvements after just the first session.
